Foundation legends and cultural integration in the ancient Mediterranean [sound recording] / [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

The colloquium was designed to explore the question of why ancient peoples frequently ascribed the origins of their own cities or nations to founders who came from abroad. The speakers collectively explore a range of legends, including those that have Arcadians establish cities and sanctuaries an Anatolia, those that make Greeks and Egyptians claim reciprocal colonization of one another's lands and traditions, and those that provide links among heroic figures in various parts of the Mediterranean. Through the examination of texts and material evidence, the participants will consider the implications of these affiliations both for the self-perception of ancient societies and their sense of inter-connectedness.
